A shop vac that will not start usually has a power-supply, switch, thermal-overload, or setup problem. Unplug the vacuum before inspecting it, empty the drum if it is full, and work through the checks below. Do not open the motor housing or bypass a safety device; electrical repairs should be handled by a qualified professional.
Start with basic safety and power checks
1. Confirm the outlet works
Plug a different appliance into the same outlet. If it does not work, check the circuit breaker or fuse panel. A shop vac may also be connected to a GFCI outlet, especially in a garage, basement, workshop, or outdoor area.
Press the Reset button on the GFCI outlet if it has tripped. If the breaker or GFCI trips again when the vacuum is connected, stop using the vacuum. Repeated tripping can indicate a damaged cord, motor fault, moisture, or an overloaded circuit.
Avoid using an extension cord unless the vacuum manufacturer permits it. If one is allowed, use a heavy-duty cord with the wire size and length specified in the manual. A lightweight or excessively long cord can cause voltage drop and prevent the motor from starting.
2. Check the plug and power cord
With the vacuum unplugged, inspect the plug and cord for:
- Cuts, crushed sections, burns, melted insulation, or exposed wire
- Loose prongs or a damaged plug
- Areas that have been pinched under a door or equipment
- A cord that becomes unusually warm during operation
Do not use a vacuum with a damaged cord. Replace the cord only with the correct manufacturer-approved part, or have the repair completed by a qualified service professional.
3. Test the switch
Move the power switch firmly through its positions. If it feels loose, sticks, works intermittently, or does not click normally, the switch may be defective.
Do not spray cleaner into the switch or bridge its terminals to make the vacuum run. A faulty switch is generally a replacement-part or service issue.
Let the motor cool down
Many shop vacuums have thermal protection that shuts the motor off if it overheats. This can happen when the filter is clogged, the hose is blocked, the drum is full, or the vacuum is operated for a long period under heavy load.
- Turn the switch off and unplug the vacuum.
- Let it cool for at least 30 minutes, or for the time stated in the manual.
- Check the filter, hose, intake, and drum before trying again.
- Reconnect it directly to a suitable outlet and test it briefly.
If it starts after cooling but shuts off again soon afterward, do not keep resetting it. Find the airflow problem or have the vacuum serviced. A motor that overheats repeatedly may be failing.
Check the filter, hose, and intake for blockage
A severely restricted airflow path can overload the motor or trigger thermal protection. With the vacuum unplugged, remove and inspect the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Clean a reusable filter only by the method allowed in the manual.
- Replace a disposable or damaged filter rather than trying to restore it.
- Make sure a wet/dry vacuum has the correct filter configuration for the material being collected.
- Inspect the hose, wand, floor nozzle, and intake opening for packed dust, screws, plastic, or other debris.
Do not operate the vacuum without a required filter. Also avoid using a wet filter unless the manufacturer specifically allows it; moisture can damage the motor and create an electrical hazard.
Check the drum, float, and collection setup
A full drum or collection bag can restrict airflow and may prevent normal operation on some models. Empty the drum and reinstall the lid securely.
For wet pickup, inspect the automatic shutoff float. If it is stuck in the raised position because of debris or dried residue, the vacuum may behave as though the drum is full. Clean it only as described in the manual, and make sure the float moves freely without being forced.
Also check that:
- The lid is seated correctly.
- The latches are fully closed.
- The collection bag is installed in the correct position, if used.
- The filter cage and retaining components are installed correctly.
- No accessory is blocking the inlet.
These setup issues more commonly cause poor suction than a completely dead vacuum, but they can contribute to overheating or a safety shutoff.
Check for moisture and recent wet pickup
If the vacuum stopped after picking up water, unplug it immediately and keep it disconnected. Do not assume that a wet/dry label means every internal component can tolerate standing water or a soaked filter.
Empty the drum and follow the manufacturer’s drying and cleaning instructions. If water may have reached the motor, switch, plug, or electrical connections, have the unit inspected before using it again. Never operate a damp or electrically damaged vacuum.
When the motor or electrical system is likely at fault
If the outlet, GFCI, cord, switch, filter, hose, drum, and cooling period do not resolve the problem, likely causes include a failed switch, thermal protector, motor, wiring connection, or control component.
Signs that call for service or replacement include:
- A burning smell, smoke, sparks, or melted plastic
- A loud hum with no motor rotation
- A breaker or GFCI that trips repeatedly
- The vacuum stopped after getting wet
- The motor starts only when the cord or switch is moved
- The unit remains completely silent after all basic checks
Do not remove the motor cover or probe live wiring unless you are qualified and have followed the manufacturer’s service procedure. For a newer or higher-value vacuum, an authorized repair may make sense. For an older unit with a failed motor or multiple worn components, replacing the vacuum is often more practical than replacing the motor.
If the shop vac starts but stops again
A vacuum that starts and then shuts off usually points to overheating, restricted airflow, a full drum, a float issue, or an electrical fault. Empty the drum, clear the hose, inspect the filter, and let the motor cool before testing again.
If it repeatedly shuts down with a clean filter, open hose, empty drum, and proper power supply, stop using it. Repeated thermal shutdowns can damage the motor and may indicate a condition that requires service.
When to replace a part or the vacuum
A replacement filter, hose, switch, or cord may be reasonable when the damaged component is clearly identified and the part is available for your exact vacuum. Match the replacement by the model number and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Replace the entire vacuum when the motor or electrical system has failed, the drum or housing is damaged, replacement parts are unavailable, or repair costs approach the cost of a comparable new unit. Choose a replacement with the voltage, power connection, wet/dry capability, drum capacity, and filtration system required for your work.
