How to Empty a Shop Vac After Wet Pickup
Turn off and unplug the shop vac, empty the tank through its drain or by carefully tipping it, and clean and dry the tank before storage.
Before emptying {#before-emptying}
Switch the shop vac off and unplug it. For a cordless model, remove the battery if the manufacturer instructs you to do so. Keep the plug, battery, and motor head away from water. If the tank is heavy, get help rather than trying to lift it while full.
Check the manual for your model’s wet-pickup instructions. Filter requirements differ: some vacs need a foam sleeve or another wet-use filter, while others specify a different setup. If you used a disposable collection bag for dry debris, remove and discard it as directed; don’t assume a paper bag can be used for liquid.

Empty the tank {#empty-the-tank}
- Move the unplugged vac to a suitable place where spilled water won’t damage flooring or reach an electrical outlet.
- If the tank has a drain port, place the opening over a suitable drain or container and remove the cap. Let the liquid drain fully, then reinstall the cap securely.
- If there’s no drain, remove the motor head only as the manual directs. Tip the tank slowly into a suitable drain or container. Don’t lift by the handle if the manual says it is not designed to support the full tank.
- Avoid pouring contaminated liquids, oils, solvents, paint, or chemicals into a storm drain or onto the ground. Follow local disposal guidance for anything other than clean water.
If the water contains debris, empty it where that debris can be caught or disposed of appropriately. Check the tank’s fill level before moving the vac; liquid can slosh even after the motor is off.
Rinse and dry the vac {#rinse-and-dry}
With the unit unplugged, rinse the tank if the manual permits it. Wipe out remaining water and debris, and allow the tank, hose, and any wet-use filter to dry as directed before storage. Keep water away from the motor head and electrical parts; don’t immerse the head or spray it with a hose.
A damp or dirty tank can develop odors, and a wet filter can affect later dry pickup if it isn’t suitable for that use. Reinstall only the filter and accessories specified for the next job. Store the vac with the tank and components dry, and leave the drain cap in place so it won’t be misplaced.
FAQ
Can I empty a shop vac while it is plugged in?
No. Turn it off and unplug it before opening the tank or removing the motor head. For cordless models, follow the manual’s battery-removal instructions.
Should I remove the filter before wet pickup?
It depends on the model. Some shop vacs require a foam sleeve or other wet-use filter, while others specify a different configuration. Follow the manual rather than assuming the filter should always be removed.
Can I pour shop-vac water down a drain?
For clean water, use a suitable drain if local rules allow it. Don’t put liquids containing chemicals, oil, paint, or other contaminants into a storm drain or onto the ground; check local disposal guidance.
